Native American (Hupa, probably)

Not on view

Square or rectangular double-headed drums are found in Northern California among the Hupa (Athabaskan), Twana and Klallam (Coast Salishan) peoples. Late nineteenth-century ethnologists observed a "box drum covered with leather" was used to accompany Hupa gambling songs.
