This instrument is said to have been made in Texcoco, Mexico, a city and state in modern Mexico. This folk instrument was made in the nineteenth century following the form of the European violin. The instrument is accompanied by a bow. Instead of a traditional scroll, the pegbox features a carved human head, with nearly a featureless face. This style of carved head can be found on other Mexican fiddles, particularly examples found in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City.
