Harp

Senufo

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

Harps and zithers with vertical bridges are found along the west coast from Senegambia to Angola. This large harp has a wood resonator and an extension on one side, unlike most, which have gourd resonators. Drums accompany this harp during Senufo funerary ceremonies for exceptional hunters, a tradition followed by other groups in the region.
