Relief

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 111

This relief is one of a group of six similar slabs found at various locations around the site. Originally, they may have lined one or several small funerary chapels. We see a man—doubtless the tomb owner—leaning comfortably on his staff. The squatting figures in front of him are presumably members of his family. The small tables in front of them suggest that they are partaking of the tomb owner's funerary meal. The family may have dined together in the same way during life.
