Scarab Incised with Crowned Uraei

Third Intermediate Period or Late Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

The base is decorated with two addorsed cobras, known as uraei; one wears the White Crown of Upper Egypt while the other wears the Red Crown of Lower Egypt. Although the cobra is both a royal emblem and a protective being in Egyptian iconography, the crowns confirm that here it is represented in its capacity of royal symbol, in this case the pharaoh as ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt. Between both reptiles is the sign for praise, thus calling for the praise of the king.
