Hatshepsut's Grandmother, Seniseneb

Late 19th Century, original New Kingdom (ca. 1479–1458 B.C.)

Howard Carter British

Not on view

This facsimile was painted by Howard Carter, excavator of the tomb of Tutankhamun. It copies an image of Queen Seniseneb, mother of Thutmose I and thus grandmother of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut, in the latter's memorial temple at Deir el-Bahri. Seniseneb wears a sheath dress and an elaborate vulture headdress, identifying her as a queen. In the larger scene from which this comes (see 30.4.137), she accompanies her son, Thutmose I.
