According to the artist in a questionnaire dated March 5, 1988, this painting "is one of my dark ominous landscapes with startled, half crazed, frightened animals. They are symbols of struggle, tension and conflict. Emotional, political and environmental problems are often the subjects of my paintings. 'The Red Goat' is a perfect example of this. This work as in many of my paintings comes from the experiences I had as a child."
