Belgian architect, designer, and retailer Gustave Serrurier-Bovy was an important proponent of Art Nouveau, a style characterized by natural forms, such as flowers and plants, and intricate, curved lines. By 1894 Serrurier-Bovy claimed to have rid his designs of any reminiscences from past or English styles. He developed his own less sculptural, somewhat plainer interpretation of Art Nouveau—seen here in the subtly curved brass arms that support the glass vase.
