This sketch is one of dozens of drawings that Benton used to compose his mural America Today, also in the Museum’s collection (2012.478a–j). Benton’s friend Max Eastman, former editor of the Marxist magazine the New Masses, posed for the seated figure in the City Activities with Subway mural panel, in which the dapper Eastman gazes dreamily at the young woman standing in front of him.
