Stock Broker

Thomas Hart Benton American

Not on view

This sketch is one of dozens of drawings that Benton used to compose his mural America Today, also in the Museum’s collection (2012.478a–j). In the City Activities with Dance Hall mural panel, the masses enjoy popular entertainment, while Wall Street appears above the crowd as a reminder of the Great Depression. Benton used this sketch for the figure of the stockbroker in the mural who is checking the tape on the latest 1930 high-speed Teletype ticker with a price board behind him.
