Folding screen with birthday celebration for General Guo Ziyi

The primary decoration of this screen records a birthday celebration for Guo Ziyi (697–781), one of the most famous generals in Chinese history. Engaging scenes of children at play, symbolic of longevity and good wishes, fill the densely carved roundels below.
The inscription on the top left bears the name of Lu Kuisheng, an allusion made by the screen’s unknown artist to this nineteenth-century lacquer master.
