Bodhisattva Manjushri with attendants

China

Not on view

Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, is identified by the text (Perfection of Wisdom) that he holds in his left hand and by the lion he rides. The lion has a fringed saddlecloth and wears a jeweled harness. He is led by a standing figure whose trousers, bare chest and curly hair suggest Central Asian origins. Two small attendants stand on clouds to the upper right and left of the composition.
