Woman Scolding Her Companion

Nellie Mae Rowe American

Not on view

Imaginative and cryptic, Rowe’s Woman Scolding Her Companion seems to present a mysterious conflict between the two main protagonists: a figure in profile wearing a flamboyant hat and a cartoonish zoomorphic creature that looks away, perhaps in shame or regret. Nevertheless, the composition’s bright, nonnaturalistic palette lends the scene a festive ambiance.
