Erica Baum American
2012
Not on view
Peeking out from a book, French actress Brigitte Bardot appears in a sort of inverted centerfold, with her face framed between the striated edges and yellowed margins of an aging paperback. Photographing books opened at random, Baum revels in the found collage of chance occurrence, whereby each spread suggests a different story. Working on a continuum with artists like Cindy Sherman, Baum recontextualizes pop-cultural detritus. Her subjects, she has explained, are like film stills—they "both conjure and withhold their stories."
