Hampton Court Palace

Joseph Pennell American

Not on view

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he represents Hampton Court Palace, near London, from the side facing the Thames. The center of the facade, adorned with pedimented pilasters, rises over low trees beneath a roof lined with chimneys. In the foreground a pond is surrounded by gravel.
