The Institute, Piccadilly

Joseph Pennell American

Not on view

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. This etching focuses on the richly ornamented facade of a building on Piccadilly in London opposite Burlington House. Designed by Edward R. Robson, it housed the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours between 1883 and 1970. The artist printed about fifty proofs.
