In this impressive portrait, engraved by Smith after Reynolds, Louis Philippe Joseph, Duke of Orleans is shown standing full-length in a landscape. He wears a hussar's uniform and is accompanied by a groom who holds his horse. "Philippe Égalité" was the son of Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans and a great art collector. He was guillotined in 1793. The diarist Joseph Farington recorded that Reynolds had described the Duke as "in manner the most elegant man he had ever seen...many men appear graceful when in motion, but...the Duke of Orelans...was the only man who appeared so when standing still."
