Decorator Edmond Lachenal French
Joseph-Théodore Deck French
Theodore Deck was the preeminent ceramic artist in France in the second half of the nineteenth century. He was interested both in technological innovation, especially in terms of glazes, and in elevating ceramics as an artistic medium. Deck frequently collaborated with artists who used his large flat dishes as ‘canvases’ on which to paint a wide range of subject matter, often in dramatically different styles as seen on this example and another in our collection (2013.239.15).
