Joseph Pennell American

Not on view

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he pressed sandpaper into a grounded plate, stopped out lighter areas of the design, then etched the plate to create a moody image of skyscrapers in lower Manhattan. The forms are outlined against the night sky, with smoke rising and reflections in the foreground. The artist printed about fifty proofs before destroying the plate.
