Gardens of the Generalife, Alhambra

Joseph Pennell American

Not on view

Pennell, a Philadelphia-born Quaker, spent the first two decades of his career abroad, living primarily in London, where he became a close associate of Whistler. Here, he represents a garden distinguished by tall trees near a building facade pierced by an arched doorway. The masonry is obscured by greenery, and a path crosses the foreground. The artist printed about fifteen signed proofs, then five hundred more were inserted into a large paper edition of Washington Irving's "The Alhambra," December 1896.
