Pilot Town, La.

Joseph Pennell American

Not on view

Pennell's etching represents low wooden buildings and docks lining a inlet on the Mississippi River. The artist was on assignment for Century Magazine in New Orleans when he created two views of Pilot Town, a place where river pilot boats guiding larger craft turned their charges over to Gulf pilots. An edition of about 20 prints were of this image, made after which the plate was destroyed.
