Wilton album, folio 8a: The Adoration of the Child with Saints Anne, John the Evangelist, and Catherine

Andrea Schiavone (Andrea Meldola) Italian

Not on view

For more information on the Wilton album see entry for 27.78.1(1-428)
A very early state of the print, possibly the first, before the shading on Saint John's robe, the Child's arm, and the Virgin's robe; the steps in the lower right corner are also remarkably different from later states. This state is earlier still than British Museum 1874,0808.357, in which the steps have not been reworked but shading is added to the robes and the child's arm. For a later substantiallly reworked state see The Metropolitan Museum Mariette Album (folio 30); for an even later state, signed with Schiavone's monogram, see 27.78.1(122); for an impression from a cracked and oxidized plate see 26.70.3(172). The composition is related to a drawing in the Uffizi, Florence (Richardson no. 137)
