The subject of this print was erroneously identified by Bartsch as Jacob's Dream or Jacob's Ladder (from Genesis 28:10-190, however the absence of the ladder and the presence of the dog and the pilgrim's staff favour an identification with Saint Roch. A preparatory drawing in opposite orientation to the print exists in a private collection in London (Richarson 1980 no. 138, fig. 10)
