The attribution of this print has long been debated. Attributed to Reni by Bartsch and Bohn (TIB 39 Commentary), it is assigned to Brizio by Birke (TIB 40 Commentary). The composition is related to a painting of the same subject by Annibale Carracci, formerly in Palazzo Sampieri in Bologna, and now at the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan. This is an example of the fourth state, with the date changed to 1610; the second state bears the date 1595. An old inscription in pen and ink on the folio of the album reads: 'Tho recond to be by An. Car. yet is by Fran. Curti & like the manner of his other prints, beside A.C. dyed An. 1609 a year before this was Etch'd'. The former owner's attribution of this etching to the Bolognese printmaker Francesco Curti (1610-1690) is unconvincing due to the fact that Curti only worked in engraving
