A remarkably strong impression of one of Barocci's first experiments in etching. The figures of the Virgin and Child derive from Barocci's painting of the Virgin and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Francis, long thought to be lost, but recently rediscovered in the deposits of the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan (see Marciari and Boorsch 2013, p. 76). While modest in size and conception, the composition was copied many times, beginning with the Carracci brothers - Agostino's copy is dated 1582 - but also by Raffaello Schiaminossi and Jan Sadeler, among others.
