Appliqué Valentine

Anonymous, 19th century

Not on view

Appliqué valentines were popular during the nineteenth century in both England and America. A valentine that could be opened, revealing private verses to the reader, appealed to the Victorian sensibility. Eight flowers are incorporated into this valentine; the blossoms lift to reveal romantic messages, appropriate for a game of fortune.
