The figures depicted on this bowl are eminent men of letters from the eighth century who shared a love of wine. Celebrated in a poem by Du Fu (712–770), “Song for the Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup,” they include the poet Li Bai and the calligrapher Zhang Xu.
