"Kaléidoscope: Ornements Abstraits"; Plate 7, Four Abstract Design Motifs

This book, titled "Kaléidoscope: Ornements Abstraits" (Kaleidoscope: Abstract Ornaments), is bound on dark blue linen boards and contains a title page and 20 plates (numbered 1-20) presenting a total of 87 designs for textiles, in the style of Art Deco. Having its peak during the "Roaring Twenties" (second half of the 1920s) and the Depression years of the 1930s, the eclecticism of Art Deco was permeated by both traditional European design traditions and contemporary avant-garde. The designs presented in this book contain colorful, abstract motifs, which evoke, with their fragmented vocabulary, the dynamism of modern culture that was common of Art Deco.

This plate presents four designs for textiles with abstract motifs. The first three are presented on vertical rectangles in the upper part of the sheet: on the left, the pattern contains a variety of vertical olive green stripes and fragments of circles colored with white and various shades of green, and other curved shapes colored with green and white, over a background with fragments of rectangles and triangles, colored with blue, purple, gray and black; on the center, the pattern presents a variety of vertical and horizontal stripes, rectangles, arches and scales, and is executed with two shades of blue, gray, white and burdgundy; on the right, the pattern contains a variety of curved shapes executed with orange, red and burgundy, turquoise curved shapes, and yellow circles, over a pattern of fragments of rectangles colored with gray and shades of blue, framed by two vertical blue stripes. The fourth pattern, presented in a horizontal rectangle on the lower part of the sheet, contains a pattern with diagonal stripes colored with purple and yellow, purple dots, brown teardrop motifs, abstract curved shapes colored with light green and black, and semi-circles colored with green and yellow.
