Frogs Under Banana Tree

After Qi Baishi Chinese

Not on view

This virtuoso woodblock reproduction of a painting by Qi Baishi was made by the Rong Bao Zhai studio in Beijing. To reproduce Qi's powerful composition—a lush banana tree towering over playful frogs—the printers used multiple woodblocks and carefully controlled their inking to capture the full range of wet to dry brushwork and the subtle shifts in ink tonality found in the original.
