Landscape with figure
Qian Shoutie Chinese
Not on view
At the center of a vortex of bold ink marks, a small figure in a wide-brimmed hat walks along a mountain path. The experimental, nearly abstract quality of this landscape was inspired by the seventeenth-century painter Shitao, whom Qian Shoutie admired as a sign of the advanced, modern spirit inherent in classical Chinese painting. The contrast between the chaotic intensity of the landscape and the solidity of the man who strides confidently at its center underscores the idea of the recluse as an intrepid figure who daringly walks his own path.
