Athenian drinking cups of the sixth and fifth century B.C. were often suspended by one handle when not in use. The viewer enjoyed the decoration on the outside of the shape and, occasionally, on the underside of the foot. In this example, the foreparts of lions and griffins have been deployed to produce a dynamic pinwheel effect.
