The Story of Apollo and Diana: Apollo killing Python

Etienne Delaune French

Not on view

Engraving, part of a set of six scenes illustrating the story of Apollo and Diana, created by Etienne Delaune between 1547 and 1548. On the first plane, in the center, Apollo holds his bow and shoots his arrow towards Python, on the left. Behind Apollo, on the right side of the scene, the crowd observes and acclaims his act. On the background, in the center, a river god hides inside a cave in a mountain, while, on another mountaint, to the right, stands a round temple and a burning altar. Under this mountain is another cave, where the Delphic oracle hides, from which emerge long rays of light. On the upper right corner, inside a cloud in the sky, Diana appears imploring to Jupiter, who sits in front of her and next to Minerva.
