Rouen

Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. In the right foreground of this print, Bone depicted his son Stephen sketching the sweeping view of the River Seine and the city of Rouen, France. At left, barges are moored along the embankment, where fishermen fish, while a few people and horse-drawn wagons plod along beside the river. The tall spire of Rouen's Cathedral dominates the skyline of buildings.
