The Virtues: Prudence

Etienne Delaune French

Not on view

Engraving, part of a series of oval prints with two theological virtues and the four cardinal virtues, represented by women standing on landscapes, created by Étienne Delaune possibly around 1576. This print represents Prudence, wearing a draped dress, holding a serpent behind her back with her left hand, and holding a mirror on the right, lifting it to look at herself. Behid her is a troop of soldiers playing trumpets and running, possibly in their way to a battle.
