Sir Muirhead Bone British, Scottish

Not on view

Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural subjects, city views, landscapes, and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars. In this working class neighborhood scene in Marseilles, France, Bone features an unusual view looking down upon railway tracks and one of the small urban stations (with horse-drawn wagons awaiting passengers or cargo) as it appears from a vantage point above an overpass. At the lower right, on the overpass, a boy leans over the low wall to look at the vista; he is poised between crouching children and a man sleeping on the shady sidewalk. He depicts a densely built urban panorama filled with buildings (and masts of a tall ship from unseen harbor) as the background, as well as distant mountains.
