Necklace

Design House Wiener Werkstätte

Not on view

Bead mat work, known as perlstickereien or perlketten, was used in jewelry and handbags produced by the Wiener Werkstätte fashion department designers. The colors and striped patterns in this necklace relate to those in enameled jewelry and textile designs created by the Werkstätte designers. Glass beads were inexpensive and appreciated for their versatility, refractive qualities, and enduring and varied colors. The use of inexpensive materials also encouraged experimentation, which likely led to the use of bold patterns in this piece. Werkstätte beaded necklace designers include Mathilde Flogl, Vally Wieslthier, Maria Strauss-Likarz, Mix Snischek, and Felice Rix.
