Engraving, part of 'Habitus variarum orbis gentium' (Costumes of the various peoples of the world), representing the costumes of men and women from various parts of the world, engraved after designs by Boissard and published by Rutz in 1581.
This engraving represents a damsel, a bourgeoise woman, and a noblewoman from Ferrara. On the left, the damsel wears a dress with fur trimmings, a necklace, and a veil, covering her head, shoulders and back, and almost entirely her face. On the center, the bourgeoise woman wears a dress with train and a cap with a shawl that covers her head, shoulders and back. She wears a double-strand pearl necklace and two long ribbons hang from the point of the bodice of her dress.
On the right, the noblewoman wears a dress with a brocaded floral pattern, the paneled skirt open on the front and revealing an underskirt, also brocaded, with a pattern of lozenges and rosettes. The border of her bodice is trimmed with a chain and has a medallion on the point. She wears pendant earrings with large pearls and a jeweled necklace with pendant pearls. Her hair is tied up and covered with a long veil, which falls over her shoulders and behind her back. She holds a fan on her left hand.
