Design for a Bulbous Vase with Abstract Female Figures (recto); Bull statuette (verso)
René Buthaud French
Not on view
This drawing contains a design for a vase with painted decoration consisting of two abstract female figures presented in a kneeling stance. The drawing consists of one large elevation, executed in color, with three smaller renderings in graphite below, showing the circumference and front and back elevations of the vase. The verso contains an idea for a bull statuette. The design is signed by René Buthaud who was a leading artist in the field of ceramics during the Art Déco period. While several drawing by his hand survive, few tie in so closely to Buthaud's artistic process with regards to the creation of his iconic ceramic and painted vases.
