Coffins of Kharushere

Third Intermediate Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 126

This elaborate set of nested coffins was excavated by Gaston Maspero in 1885. The complete set includes the outer coffin (86.1.31a, b), intermediate coffin (86.1.32a, b), innermost coffin (86.1.33a, b), and cartonnage case (86.1.34).

The mummified body of Kharushere (86.1.35), who held the office of Doorkeeper of the House of Amun, was found inside the cartonnage case. His parents were the Doorkeeper of the House of Amun, Bes, and the Mistress of the House and Chantress of Amun, Tanetheretib.
