This drawing represents a plan for the landscaping around an undefined villa. It was made by Franz Xavier Heissinger, who was a celebrated garden designer, and sometimes architect, from Munich. He became much sought after predominantly in Switzerland in the earlier part of his career, before he moved to the United States in or around 1870. This move may have been inspired by his previous work for his American clientele on several estates in Switzerland and Germany. The current design likely dates from his American period and may have been intended for publication. It is characterized by a large parterre with multiple fountains laid out in the style of Daniel Marot (early 18th-century), and an oval driveway encircling both the house and parterre.
