Mosquée, au Kaire

Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey French

Not on view

This print is a composite of Girault’s daguerreotype view and detail of the Khayrbak Mosque, probably based on a drawing made after the photographs. Early cameras projected a laterally reversed view onto the plate, which could then be copied or transferred to a printing matrix and printed, so that the resulting image appeared in its natural orientation. Girault initially planned to publish one hundred prints but only completed twenty-four, complaining that sales would not cover his production costs.
