Lotus and Carp
This eight-panel screen by the South Korean painter Song Yeong-bang (b. 1936) depicts a continuous composition of lotus flowers in various stages of bloom. Their large and ornate leaves, dramatically executed in wet splashes of dark and light ink with touches of neutral color, form the focus of the painting, contrasting with the blossoms outlined in pale, dry ink. A group of carp is shown swimming in the water around the plants. The artist’s signature (牛玄: Uhyeon, the artist’s sobriquet) and seal (宋榮邦: Song Yeong-bang) are visible on the lower left of the far left panel.
