This image of parents attending their ailing son is one of four by Houghton, paired with James Hain Friswell's poem "In Five Acts," published in the gift book "A Round of Days" (1866) (John William North designed a fifth). The poem traces key moments in a married couple's life over decades together. This impressoin was reissued in "Picture Poesies" (1874).
