Royal Doulton rose to prominence in the second half of the nineteenth century as an industrial ceramics firm that produced a range of wares for the middle class market in Victorian England. This example demonstrates the firm’s shift to art pottery. Barbotine, or colored-slip painting has been used to depict a fantasy landscape in the evening that evokes the techniques of the Nabis, who explored the use of bright colors and flat patterns in their moody paintings at the turn of the twentieth century.
