Pair of candlesticks

Korea

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 233

Buddhist and shamanistic rituals can range from simple supplications to complex events. The temple settings for the various rituals are often highly ornate from brightly painted architecture to lavish interiors decorated with pictorial and sculptural icons, offerings, and ritual objects. Objects, such as these candlesticks, were functional, but also decorated with auspicious signs. The lotus flowers pattern at the top and leaves at the base are symbols of purity and rebirth.
