Shortly after the death of the sculptor Hiram Powers, "Harper's Weekly" published this image of his studio located on the Poggio Romana, just outside the walls of Florence. He had moved there from a downtown location five years earlier. Related texts notes that the statues of "Eve," "Everett," the "Fisher Boy;" "California" and "Webster" are the sculptor's original plaster models and that he preferred that material to clay. Through a door at the back we glimpse a workman creating a marble reproduction of "Everett." At right, an open door admits sunlight from "a beautiful garden, where Powers and his family used to sit in the eveing. Many an American visitor to the city on the Arno retains delightful memories of this charming spot."
