Marble bowl

Cycladic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 151

Technical analysis: Ultraviolet-induced visible luminescence examination, optical microscopy

This relatively deep, large marble bowl is recomposed from at least three fragments with additional mended losses at the rim. The smooth sides of the vessel gradually flare upward and outward to meet a clearly defined rolled rim. The latter is emphasized by a horizontal groove around the interior of the vessel. This particular bowl is a relatively deep version of the well-known rolled-rim type. (1)

The original surface is in good condition with patches of encrustation throughout.
