Porte sur the Canal, Bruges

Caroline Helena Armington Canadian

Not on view

One of Armington's earliest etchings, this centers on a dark arched doorway facing a canal, surrounded by crumbling masonry and exposed bricks. The artist found the subject during a visit to Bruges in Belgium. Born near Toronto, she moved to Paris with her artist husband Frank Armington in 1905. They both learned to etch in 1908 and then traveled through, to Algeria and North America to find subjects. This work demonstrates the influence of James McNeill Whistler and the continued significance in the early twentieth century of principles espoused by the Etching Revival.
