Le Desir de Plaire (Desire to Please)

Engraver Samuel William Reynolds, the elder British
After Claude-Marie Dubufe French

Not on view

This half-length portrayal of a young woman wearing a white gown with a pointed bodice and short puffed sleeves is based on a painting by Dubufe titled "Admiring the New Necklace." The figure's hair is dressed in large curls and she admires herself in an oval hand mirror while holding up a long necklace draped around her shoulders, her elbow resting on a fur-trimmed cloth. The style of the dress suggests a date after 1820.
