This print has been cut out of a Spanish book on anatomy, possibly Juan Valverde's "Historia de la composicion del cuerpo humano", which was published in Rome in 1556. Most of the illustrations in this book were derived from Andrea Vesalius' famous book on anatomy "De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem" (Seven Books on the Human Body), published in 1543 with illustrations in woodcut. The engraved illustrations in Valverde's book are thought to be executed by the French printmaker Nicolas Beatrizet.
